Frequently Asked Questions

Hull Maintenance/ Bottom Cleaning:

How much do you charge for bottom cleaning?

Prices vary depending on your location, boat size and frequency of the cleanings.  One-time cleanings are generally charged at an hourly rate and scheduled cleanings are billed by the foot. Please contact us for an estimate.

How often should I have my boat cleaned?

Hull maintenance plans are done on a minimum of every month, but it depends on the local conditions.  Summer months, warmer waters, and high current areas need to be cleaned more frequently.

Do I really need to clean it that often with new paint?

Yes, paint manufacturers recommend waiting 6-8 weeks before cleaning a new bottom job.  Regular cleanings every month after that will extend the life of your paint by as much as a year or two. The harder it is to remove, the more paint it will take with it.  In fact, The Clean Marina Program recommends cleaning often to keep hard growth to a minimum, which will not only keep toxins out of the water but deter the transport of invasive species to other areas.

What other benefits are there to regular hull cleanings?

Regular service will ensure your vessel is running at peak performance.  Clogged intakes can cause your engines to overheat and heavy growth can increase fuel consumption by gallons per hour.  With regular scheduled maintenance, divers can regulate zinc anodes as well, insuring protection from galvanic corrosion.

Service Contracts:

What does the contract cover?

Damage inspections, propeller removal & replacement, disentanglement, dockside item retrieval, zinc replacement, and discounts on other services where available.

Does it cover propeller repair?

No, not the repair itself but we can help arrange for the repair by an authorized Pier 88 prop shop and we can often transport the props for you.

Are bottom cleanings covered?

No, but we will arrange for a Pier 88 Network affiliate to clean your boat.  Discounts are often offered to our members and the work will be guaranteed and performed only by licensed and insured divers.

Where am I covered?

Anywhere in the coastal US, plus the major US rivers and the Great Lakes.

What if I am docked in a location without a Network Affiliate?

In the rare occasion we don’t have a Network Affiliate diver we will attempt to locate a suitable replacement.  In an even rarer occasion there are no divers available whatsoever, you will need to have your boat hauled for the required service.  Pier 88 will reimburse you for part of the cost associated with the haul out.

Am I covered in the Bahamas or Canada?

Yes, but in limited areas only.  Contact Us to be certain.

Propeller Repair Services:

How much does it cost to repair my propellers?

It depends on several factors, including the size of the propeller, the extent of the damage, and it varies from shop to shop and by geographical location.

Do you apply PropSpeed?

Pier 88 recommends PropSpeed and can arrange for the application.  Prices vary and generally depend on the size of the props and the amount needed.

Why should I use PropSpeed?

PropSpeed will help increase speed as well as use less fuel.  It also helps slow down growth on the running gear much like anti-fouling paint does on the hull.  The props still require regular cleaning but there should be less need for scraping.
